I BOUGHT THE BOOK COMMENTS

With over a decade of careful observation, thought, self-application, and teaching, Dr. Clouse has figured out very simple and savvy ways to improve balance and stability that are not inherently obvious. The first part of his book reads like an entertaining biography describing how he successfully overcame his own difficulties with balance and walking. The rest of the book provides detailed textbook instructions with illustrations to teach the reader how to “reclaim natural movement.” Although this book is mainly intended for people with movement disorders, anyone can benefit from the increased awareness it provides about healthy posture and avoidance of maladaptive behaviors that over time can cause body damage. A small investment for improved posture and mobility. It is oriented mainly for people with mild to severe movement disorders and to provide training for physical therapists, doctors, and other care providers who care for people with such disorders. This book provides a refreshingly different and positive outlook for people with movement disorders and hope for improvement. Brace yourself for an educational adventure to learn to attune to your pressure points and relax some of those tense muscles.

If I could recommend only one book to the ataxia community, it would be “Reclaiming Natural Movement,” by Dr. Tom Clouse. It’s not an easy read, and the material is not easy to apply. In fact, it’s the most difficult work I’ve ever done. There’s a reason I’ve been doing it for more than 11 years with no end in sight. It is worth it.
The teachings in this book are with me literally every step of the way. They are the reason I’m still taking steps at all, though that is not nearly the extent of the benefit. The content is explanations of universal principles of movement, as they relate to movement disorders, and corresponding exercises; written by someone with the unique perspective of a former surgeon who has ataxia.
The book was recently released, and also has supplemental videos to help with the exercises. I’m posting this not because I have any interest in selling books or anything. I don’t. I want people to know about the only thing that’s ever helped me with my ataxia symptoms; to take a chance as I did 11 years ago, and feel some of the same things I have been feeling over that time. We have a lot more control over our human conditions than the conventional guidance in the ataxia community would lead you to believe. In “Reclaiming Natural Movement,” Dr. Clouse shows us the way.

Thank you for putting this book together. Thank you for giving us real tips that work!
I’m amazed how well these work, who knew!

You and your book are great motivators to me as it has motivated me to do more with my life and not just sit around all day. I use a transport chair with 8″ wheels and sit all day except for exercising. This morning, I practiced walking in the bathroom. I took about 6 steps using flat feet and without holding onto anything and it felt great! Yesterday, I folded my clean clothes while standing. I’m trying to use my feet more, by standing up and/or walking some to get my legs stronger. At times, I could feel my legs getting stiff and/or weak muscles and other times, my legs felt good and could walk better. Its a process but hope to improve every day. At the moment, I am not going to a physical therapist so I’m doing this all on my own. You mentioned that you improved with your walking by yourself so I know it can be done with or without anybody.

You are a very caring and intellectually gifted adult!! Thanks for sharing and I will continue to let you know about my thoughts as I get further into your book, and encourage everyone I know to purchase this important book. One thing I have understood so far is that it isn’t just for Ataxia. It’s to help all movement disorders!

It is remarkably reader friendly. And, SO human . Real( genuine) ; the reader can relate and believe in the value of the work. It’s SO much more useful and enjoyable than I could have imagined an instructional text to be!!

I think of this book as a Christmas present to the world. My friend, Beth, introduced me to its author at least a decade ago. Beth had been searching the internet for ways to address her aging father’s specific difficulties with ambulation . She located a “ Dr . Thomas Clouse” who specializes in her father’s specific movement problems, and then summoned Tom to Buffalo to work with her Dad . Dr. Clouse and I developed a working relationship; he even asked me if I would want to edit a book he had begun work on. I began to tackle the task, and I soon saw that the project warranted More care than I could afford to give it at the time; I was raising three children in the foreign-to-us environment of Buffalo. Still, Tom and I worked one-on-one , on and off, mostly with clients. My work had led me to specialize in neurological diseases ; Tom was very instrumental in my growth in this area. He had helped me to help individuals experiencing movement problems due to Parkinson’s , Spinal Cerebellar Atrophy, stroke recovery , general aging, and more. He has traveled all around the U S and other parts of our world to reach ataxic individuals who had heard of the success his work has wrought. The people he has worked with have fleshed out this book, which I consider to be a masterpiece. It is now available, ten- plus years since I witnessed it’s emerging.I was surprised when I received it; for a manuscript that deals with such esoteric phenomena,it’s really a user- friendly ,easy read. This week , Tom asked me how the book was different than what I might have expected. “ Tom”, I told him, “ the book is so HUMAN .” Since leaving his practice as a general surgeon, Tom always only worked for donations. Now, he has this book to sell. I can guarantee you, it’s worth the perusal. It’s hard to put down, and it can definitely help many frustrated, frightened individuals to feel safe in their own bodies again.

• My balance is terrible.
What can I do to make it better?

• My body is stiff and inflexible when I am standing.
Can this be helped?

• I often tip and fall.
I wish I could stop this from happening!

• I trip and stumble when I walk.
Can someone please tell me how to stop doing this.

• When I walk, my feet seem to be out of control.
Can anything be done to correct this?

• My legs and body shake when I’m standing.
What is the cause of this?

• Often when I sit down, and when I stand up, I fall back into the chair.
I wish I could stop doing this!

• I don’t talk as much because my speech sounds terrible.
Is there a way to make it better?

• When I do things with my hands, I have trouble controlling them.
How can I stop spilling things and dropping things?

• I am very afraid of steps, especially when going down them!
I wish someone could tell me how to be safer on steps!

My name is Mike Sweeney and I’m 68 years old. I was diagnosed with SCA1 in 1997 and took a medical retirement in 2006. My movements and walking ability continued to decline and just a couple of months ago I believed that I would soon have to move from using a cane to wheelchair. I felt that unsafe on my feet.

Then Dr. Tom Clouse came to town. I worked with him for a dozen or more hours and he showed me how to move again. He taught me how to feel and be safe on my feet again. Because of that today I am walking safely without a cane. I’m also navigating steps, curbs, hills and uneven terrain without assistance or fear. I’m doing things I never would have tried before working with Dr. Clouse, like mowing the lawn last week for the first time in several years.

The time I spent working with him also enabled me to enjoy a three week road trip last month with my grandkids. Because of him I was able to walk with the kids through Yellowstone and Zion Parks, float down the Virgin River in Utah, and take them to Disneyland, Custer’s Battlefield and Mount Rushmore. It was the trip of a lifetime!

Friends and family are commenting on how much better I’m walking. As one friend told me, “He gave you back your mobility.” True!

Tom Clouse is the most unselfish person I have ever met. He travels the world working with people with ataxia because he wants to help them have better lives. He certainly succeeded with me and the 10 or so other people he worked with while he was here in Minnesota in June.

A simple “Thanks Tom” doesn’t begin to express the gratitude I have for this man. I was so lucky to have worked with him and so proud to call him friend.
